woman-eating-grapes-at-holiday-partyAt Olivera Weight Loss we want you to have a happy AND healthy holiday season.  We know that eating healthy during the holiday season at social gatherings can be a challenge. Here are some ABC’s on how to do it right:

Anticipate the challenge and plan ahead!   This would be a good time to get on top of physical activity and healthy eating habits.  We encourage you to do at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week and center your meals around vegetables, fruits, minimally processed whole grains, protein, and lean poultry.  This is also a good time to start looking for healthy recipes to cook for your holiday meals.

Bring your own dish.   Bring your own healthy dish to the party.  You will make a good impression and will have something healthy to eat if there are limited or no healthy food options at the party.  If you need some help, we have lots of good recipes on our blog.

Control your hunger.   Make sure you eat a healthy nutritious snack before going to the party.   You are more likely to take time to make healthy food choices and not overeat when you are not hungry and more in control of your appetite.

Drink less.   Many drinks, especially holiday drinks, are loaded with calories.  For example, 1 cup of eggnog can contain 350 calories!   Instead, have some unsweetened sparkling water with a small splash of cranberry juice.

Eat slowly.   Your brain registers the feeling of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating.   Eating slowly will help you cut down on extra calories you would consume if you ate faster.

Forget the big holiday sweater.   Wearing more fitted clothing with a belt around your waist will make you more conscious about your body (and all the hard work you have done so far!) and won’t allow as much room for a big meal.

Go to the party to have fun.   Take your focus off the food.   Make an effort to meet new people and catch up with people you already know.  And be sure to laugh and dance – you can burn about 200 calories in 30 minutes just by dancing! And, of course, laughing is good for the soul.

Have a happy and healthy holiday season from your friends at Olivera Weight Loss!
